As a result of the passage of House Bill 1353 during the 2021 legislative session, the Department of Water Resources was created (effective August 1, 2021) - replacing the State Water Commission. The Director of the Department of Water Resources is appointed by the governor and serves as a Cabinet member. The Director provides overall leadership and decision-making, has hiring responsibilities, and oversees the State Engineer and Department of Water Resources divisions and staff.
